@tweeter_anita &I did two episodes earlier this year @EmpirePodUK on the roots of the current conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
One, with James Barr, was on the 1916 Sykes-Picot agreement and the way the British and the French partitioned the Middle East between them during the course of World War One, while also making incompatible promises both to the Arabs and the Zionist movement.
The second, with Tom Segev, was on the 1917 Balfour Declaration and how impossible promises of creating a Jewish Homeland in Palestine, while "it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of the existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine," inevitabily led thirty years later to the creation of the State of Israel and the Nakba- the explusion of 750,000 Palestinians from their homes and homeland.
Both episodes may be helpful to anyone wishing to understand the historical context of the horrors of the last week. Here are the links.
