"Irrespective of whether a child or young person has experienced trauma or not, in order to thrive and reach their full educational potential, working together to provide a psychologically safe school/college for all those working and living in that environment is paramount.
With the right environment, all children and young people can transcend the impacts of the barriers posed simply through us as educators being our authentic, human selves.
Strong, nourishing, nurturing relationships with adults is a preventive strategy and what we do know about working with those who have experienced trauma, is
that we don’t need to know about the trauma. In other words, we don’t need to go trauma digging. Developing a trauma informed culture captures everyone!"

I keep pondering how our society thinks this is an acceptable way to treat children. How does a system charged with the care of children convey to its staff that it is acceptable to punish, shame & anger children because they don’t follow clothing rules?
I can’t imagine adults who consign children to this terror intend to cause harm. I can’t imagine they can admit to themselves that they cause harm. They will need #denial as a tool for self-protection. Children carry the consequences of what adults refuse to see.
Restorative practices are in no way about excusing behaviour. It's about working together to help children take responsibility & resolve it.
This enables us to build and maintain healthy relationships, resolve difficulties, and repair harm when relationships breakdown.🧠🌱

In my full time classroom teacher years (2007-2020 so far), the first 1-2 weeks of the summer holiday was a combo of headaches, low mood, lethargy, exhaustion and even emotion. Maybe it was the body coming out of an unhealthy heightened stress level? The last 1-2 weeks of holiday was a weird mix of dread, anxiety, excitement and looking at pipe dream alternatives to teaching. Got the nice wonderful 2-3 weeks in the middle!
The “Behaviour Crisis” in schools is not going away. The pandemic has affected developmnt even of babies. We must stop searching for who to blame: kids, govt, parents, teachers, etc. We must understand human development (ie trauma). Let me explain. THREAD https://t.co/a7CGPsiJh4
