🚨 FIRST CONFIRMED CASE OF CYCLOSPORIASIS REPORTED IN MARYLAND 🚨

MARYLAND — Health officials have confirmed the first case of cyclosporiasis in Maryland this year as public health agencies monitor an increase in cases across parts of the country.

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite. People can become infected after consuming food or water contaminated with the parasite, most commonly fresh produce such as leafy greens, herbs, berries, and other fruits and vegetables.

Symptoms typically appear about one week after exposure and may include:
• Watery diarrhea
• Stomach cramps
• Nausea
• Fatigue
• Loss of appetite
• Weight loss

If left untreated, symptoms can last for several weeks.

Health officials are continuing to investigate whether the Maryland case is linked to the recent increase in Cyclospora infections reported in multiple states. At this time, no specific food source has been identified.

Residents are encouraged to thoroughly wash fresh fruits and vegetables, practice good hand hygiene, and seek medical attention if they experience persistent gastrointestinal symptoms.
