So much good information in one article @nellkduke. If you haven't checked it out, become a member of @ASCD to read this and many other timely articles.
My piece in this issue is: When Young Readers Get Stuck. Big shout out to my colleague @CarlaShalaby's important piece also in this issue: Classroom Management as a Curriculum of Care.
“One thing that we can do right now, even with all the question marks about next year, is refamiliarize ourselves with the anchoring principles of a strong writing workshop.” Thank you @AllisonMarchett and @RebekahODell1 for this invaluable reminder!
@farcreading Ask the kids! Listen to them as they talk. Ask for their interests. Because we are getting close to the end of the year ask your current class what books they think you should get for next years Ss. Ask the T's in the grade below what the kids loved to read.
@farcreading Speed dating and book tastings are awesome ways to expose students to new and different books. Book talks, book chats, book trailers, and flipgrid are great ways to expose students to more interesting books and books that they might not every pick up.
@farcreading Creating a risk free environment is key. We need to praise students when they ask questions. Children are naturally curious & we need to promote & encourage that curiosity by valuing their questions and letting them know that all questions are welcome & encouraged.
@farcreading I provide PD to Ts & I really emphasize choice. I have done speed book dating so that S are exposed to lots of different books. Ss read for 3 minutes & then add to their list if they like the book. Pass and repeat. They find books that they never thought they would like.
1. Take any normal worksheet with review questions.
2. Cut the sheet into slips.
3. Hide those slips in plastic eggs.
4. Toss the eggs in a trash can.
5. Stop wasting your time and your students' time with worksheets.
Hosted my 1st Book Tasting as a reward for a 5th grade class donating the most books during a book drive. Students had a chance to sample and rate 3 books from a variety of genres. Many students discovered a new book they were excited to start reading right away! #LCliteracy
