A rare oarfish, known in Japanese folklore as an earthquake omen, just washed up in Playa Quemada, Canary Islands—about 25 miles south of Las Palmas.

These deep-sea giants usually hang out 3,200 feet underwater, growing up to 56 feet long.

When they surface, experts say they’re sick or dying, but superstitious folks point to the 2011 Fukushima earthquake, which was preceded by multiple oarfish sightings.

In August, one washed up in California, just days before a 4.6 quake hit Los Angeles.
