Cruise is a once-in-a-generation lead actor and a brilliant stuntman but roles that emphasize his iconic status like the MI franchise or Top Gun tend to obscure his actual acting skills which are just as impressive when given a morally complex/ambiguous character to play. Collateral is a great example, the rare time in his career where he straight-out plays the villain and nails it. Magnolia is another. I suspect as soon as he can no longer throw himself off mountain cliffs he'll go down as one of the best dramatic actors of his generation, up there with DDL.
