Mexico Is Not a Failed State Desperate to Flee - The World Cup Just Proved It

For decades, American propaganda has relentlessly pushed a singular, dehumanising narrative: that every Mexican’s lifelong dream is to “escape” their broken country, sneak across the border, and become an illegal citizen in the United States.

This idea was central to Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, built almost entirely around “the wall” - a physical barrier meant to preserve American exceptionalism against the supposed hordes of desperate invaders.

Hollywood reinforced this stereotype with films like Sicario, which portray Mexico as a lawless, cartel-infested wasteland of violence and chaos.

The message has always been clear: Mexico is a failed state, its people identity-less, cultureless, and purposeless beyond crossing into the “land of the free.”

Then came Mexico’s Round of 16 performance at the World Cup. After a commanding 2-0 victory over Ecuador, the Estadio Azteca erupted in seismic celebration. The passion, organisation, and sheer energy of Mexican fans have been nothing short of extraordinary. The imagery is powerful - vibrant, proud, and deeply rooted in national identity.

These are not the desperate, rootless people American propaganda has tried to sell us.

The contrast could not be starker. While the U.S. media and political class continue to peddle stories of Mexican failure and dependency, the world is witnessing a nation with real culture, real talent, and real pride. The fan culture, the atmosphere, and the footballing quality on display have left many questioning the entire narrative.

The Real Purpose of the Propaganda

The truth is that every sovereign country has the capacity to build and sustain its own economy. But to maintain the current global order, powerful interests must suppress aspirations of true independence in the Global South.

The most effective tool for this is perception management - systematically demeaning, impugning, and maligning nations until they are psychologically reduced to failed states in the eyes of the world and, more importantly, in their own eyes.

Mexico’s strong World Cup showing is a timely reminder that this propaganda is just that - propaganda. Mexico is a country with deep history, rich culture, and significant potential. Its people are not defined by desperation to cross borders. They are defined by resilience, creativity, and national pride that manifests powerfully when the world is watching.

The same tactic has been used on many Global South nations: amplify the negative, downplay the positive, and create a self-fulfilling prophecy of dependency.

Kenya has faced similar narratives - portrayed as chaotic, corrupt, and incapable - while ignoring the deliberate sabotage of its institutions and economy.

Mexico’s performance at this World Cup should serve as an eye-opener. It is a vibrant, living nation - not a caricature invented to justify walls, exclusion, and continued exploitation. The real story is not one of escape. It is one of dignity, identity, and the persistent human desire for self-determination.

The propaganda machine may be loud, but the images from the Estadio Azteca and Mexico City speak louder. Mexico is not waiting to be saved. It is already alive.
