Detective First Grade Jonathan Diller lived a life defined by bravery and nobility — even within the NYPD, he chose the noblest and most dangerous assignments, stepping into situations most people will never face.

Two years after he was killed in the line of duty, his loss is still felt across this department and throughout the city. Today, we honored Jonathan’s life, his work, and the way he showed up, a legacy that generations of officers will carry forward.

To Stephanie, Ryan, and the entire Diller family: the NYPD will always stand with you.

Jonathan will forever be a hero of New York City, and may his memory continue to be a blessing.

New York City, meet the hero cops who apprehended two individuals charged with ISIS-inspired terrorism last week. Our entire city owes these officers a debt of gratitude.

They are a reminder that the safety and security of New York City rests on the judgment and courage of the men and women of the NYPD. On Saturday, March 7, that was on full display.

When two IEDs were ignited in the middle of a crowded protest, these officers didn’t step back. They stepped forward without hesitation and without regard for their own safety.

They acted on instinct and training to protect people they did not know and would likely never meet. Moments like that remind us what policing truly requires.

Ash Wednesday marks the start of the Lenten season, and a time of reflection and renewal.

Our NYPD Chaplains visited locations throughout the city to distribute ashes to our officers, helping them prepare for the 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving.

Over the weekend, thousands of uniformed and civilian members of the NYPD were working across the city to keep New Yorkers safe.

Despite the dangerous conditions, the NYPD showed up. Calls were answered, and officers were out in neighborhoods responding to people who needed help during a storm that kept most of the city inside.

So much of this work was only possible because of our PCTs, the steady voices at the other end of every 911 call. These are the first of the first responders, and @NYCMayor and I visited them today to thank them for their tireless work this weekend during the storm.

We remember Detective First Grade Russel Timoshenko, who was shot during a car stop in Brooklyn and died days later from his injuries. Just 23 years old, he served with quiet strength and a brave heart. We honor him today and always. #FidelisAdMortem

On this #MemorialDay, I wanted to share Peggy Noonan’s Wall Street Journal column celebrating the movie, ‘The Best Years of our Lives,’ about returning WWII veterans. It is my favorite movie of all time. I have seen it countless times. I think it resonates so much with me because my 18-year-old Dad and my wife, Rikki’s, 32-year-old Dad both served in that war. My Dad was a sailor on an aircraft carrier off of Okinawa, fighting off Kamikaze attacks while Rikki’s Dad was in the US Infantry fighting off Banzai charges on Okinawa at the same time. I imagine that their homecomings might have been like those portrayed in this remarkable movie.
