My grandmother is the baby in the picture. The only one born in Piraeus. Everyone else from Smyrna.

My great grandfather Ilias, arrested by Turkish authorities in Smyrna (like all Greek men his age) and sent to a labor camp in central Anatolia. He would have eventually died but a Turk helped him escape and get Athens to reunite with his family who had already evacuated Smyrna.

They lost everything and lived in the slums of Piraeus until he built up his business and bought land.

Today we remember the Greeks of Asia Minor, like my family.
