I want a layer of abstraction between the most aggressive, complex parts of production and my deployment and hosting conventions. This gives me room for low-risk experimentation, isolation from vendor risk, and the option for very production-alike development setups.
Developers spend a lot of time talking about what architecture is the most optimized. Often, the answer is also something that constrains your future options.
Instead, perhaps we can focus on what architectures have the greatest potential for optimization.
This approach should preserve your optionality in vendors and implementation, which may allow you to be *more* aggressive in trying out new tech than if your design is coupled to the flavor of the week and got stuck.
