With the ending of this book, the reader learns about"his"past, how he first started"the special ones,"and you get to see inside his mind as the POV changes. This book was enjoyable from the start, and kept me wanting to read more and figure out the overarching mystery. #apread18
Overall, I thought "The Special Ones" was a great book and I would definitely recommend it to other students. It's a very eerie story about a man who kidnaps people and traps them on a farm, I was very satisfied with the ending it tied up all the loose ends. #apread18
One thing about my book I didn't enjoy, was that halfway through the story, it began to change the POV from Esther to "him," this was unexpected and a little confusing, many chapters I could not tell who was narrating. #apread18
Additionally, all the chores in the house must be down in a certain order, "There's an order to how the floor must be swept ('from the far right corner to the far left') and how dishes are washed ('first cutlery-largest to smallest-then plates, bowls, and pots'),"(127) #apread18
I also noticed the theme of freedom in my book. The special ones do not have any freedom, Esther is not allowed to go out past the house, Lucille is only alllowed in the house and garden, but Harry and Felicity are also allowed on the farm (1/2) #apread18
A big theme in my book is identity, all four characters are required to change their whole life and forget their real identity in order to please “him” and be the special ones. Esther often thinks about her past but then restrained herself for thinking any further. #apread18
In my book, the collection of the new Lucille has just taken place and Harry and Esther are trying to brainwash her t believe she is the real Lucille. I still don't know why these characters are there, the only evidence is a very old picture of the original special ones #apread18
@mrack2002 My book does something similar, "The Special Ones" mentions a man who is watching over them as they live their lives. It also mentions their "followers," however doesn't give the man or the followers any other description, making me want to read on #apread18
I noticed in my book that the author uses nature words to describe things like smell, taste, and appearance. For example, rather than saying 6 days, Bailey writes "It's been six sunrises since I last made 'his' tonic..." I personally think this is a very unique approach #apread18
@IGyzen Although my book doesn't switch perspectives, it has a similar theme, the main characters are not allowed to talk about their past, because they must please their "followers" and pose as people they are not, therefore forgetting the truth about their real past. #apread18
Currently, the characters Esther (narrator), Harry, and Felicity are searching for their “new” Lucille in order to please “him,” an unknown character #apread18
I’m currently reading “The Special Ones” by Em Bailey, the story is about 4 people who are chosen to lead their followers, but as one leaves they must find someone to take their place, which involves a kidnapping #apread18
