🏒 A great game for getting defensemen comfortable activating into the offense.
This 4 v 3 transition game forces the D to get involved, find good offensive lanes, and become a dangerous second wave.
A simple, competitive way to work on D activation, transition and creating offense with numbers.
Run at Buffalo Sabres Development Camp.
Huge thanks to the Sabres for opening their camp to the public and giving players and coaches the opportunity to learn from it. 👏

If there was ever a MUST WATCH clip to show parents about youth hockey, this might be the one. Amazing insight from former pro player Luciano Aquino from our latest podcast.
Curious about how NTDP conducts a practice?

Small-area games aren’t just for fun, they’re powerful teaching tools, writes Coach Shaun Earl. Start with a target, layer in drills, freeze for feedback, set smart constraints and reinforce across sessions. Turn what looks like play into lasting learning. https://t.co/fyJ5Y5euJW
Hey Hockey Community,
I NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
In 2026, one of our big priorities is going to be growing the game - with a major focus on the grassroots. We're looking to collaborate and find some of the best ideas to get more people playing the game...and keeping people in the game that are already here.
If you are involved in a youth hockey organization, or are a parent of a player in an organization, we'd love to hear from you!!! What are some successful initiatives that you've put on or seen that have brought people to the rink or have made it so fun for the people already there? Examples could include...
-Fun events you've put on
-Collaboration with town boards and councils
-Events you've put on with schools in your community
-Learn to Play or Continue to Play initiatives
-Using social media or digital marketing
-Partnering with other sports in the community
-Creative marketing or outreach initiatives
-Creative initiatives around house or rec leagues.
-Any other ideas you've seen!!
We've looked into membership and participation numbers in the US and Canada and we don't love what we see. We see a real need to invest more time, effort, and resources into the grassroots growth of the game.
If you have ideas or thoughts, shoot them in the comments below or send me an email at [email protected]. We'd love to hear how you're growing the game in your area!!
Grow your coaching and stay on the ice this new year by checking your coaching requirements and making sure that you are all set.

🏒 IHS Practice of the Week: Forechecking Habits
🚨 Practice Theme: This practice focuses on forechecking habits and routes and is also a good chance to inversely work on breakouts.

There should be no such thing as a “shutdown defenseman” or a “bottom 6 forward” in youth hockey. Our goal should be to develop versatile players that can play in multiple roles once they graduate to higher level hockey.
Listen in to a few USA Hockey's Ken Martel on how rule changes are like constraints that we use in practice.

Want to develop true game-changers? Remove the safety net. Coach through constraints by targeting ‘rate limiters’ (what’s holding players back) and ditching ‘rate enhancers’ (what masks weakness). Let the game teach adaptation, not drills. https://t.co/P4IVavdW80
@HockeyThinkTank Thanks for helping us continue to spread the word Topher! USA Hockey has been delivering this message for decades AND with increased focus since the ADM was launched in 2009. All of youth hockey should have an “age appropriate player first mentality”
