I have two clients who went to med school in Bulgaria because the equipment in their university hospitals was far superior to what we have in the NHS.

There’s also a cap on the number of medical school places in Britain.

Interestingly, they’re both privately educated, very smart kids from HNW families, and chose to study abroad instead of here.

I searched to see whether there was any data supporting a broader point, and 70% of doctors joining the UK workforce with Bulgarian medical degrees in 2023 were actually British nationals.

That feels like a pretty obvious failure of UK medical training capacity.
