As part of this commitment, the Commission yesterday paid a courtesy visit to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi, to deepen collaboration on strengthening Nigeria’s transport ecosystem.
The discussions focused on addressing critical sector challenges, unlocking emerging opportunities, and identifying practical pathways toward developing an efficient, integrated, and sustainable transportation system that drives economic growth, enhances mobility, and improves national competitiveness.
The NESG delegation, led by Board Director Mr. Nnanna Ude, included Mrs. Saadiya Aliyu, Facilitator, IASPC, and Engr. Gabriel Ekanem, Thematic Lead, Water and Sanitation, IASPC.
Together, we are strengthening partnerships that move ideas into action and infrastructure into impact, building a transport system that works for Nigeria’s future.

FG INAUGURATES INTER-MINISTERIAL COMMITTEE FOR 27TH DEMOCRACY DAY CELEBRATION
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON, has inaugurated the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) for the 27th Democracy Day Celebration, urging members to commence immediate preparations for a successful commemoration of Nigeria's democratic journey.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony held on Tuesday at the SGF's Conference Room, Shehu Shagari Complex, Abuja, Senator Akume described Democracy Day as an opportunity to reflect on the resilience, courage and determination of Nigerians who made immense sacrifices in the struggle for democratic governance.
The SGF paid glowing tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 democratic struggle and the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose sacrifice and commitment to democracy led to the recognition of June 12 as Democracy Day.
He noted that the democratic values and institutions being strengthened across the country today are founded on the sacrifices and struggles of patriots and democrats who fought for the enthronement of democratic rule in Nigeria.
According to him, commemorating Democracy Day remains a fitting and necessary way of honouring their memory while celebrating the nation's democratic progress.
Senator Akume further stated that Democracy Day provides the Federal Government with an opportunity to showcase its achievements and reaffirm its commitment to democratic ideals, institutional strengthening and national development.
He noted that the celebration would enable the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to demonstrate to Nigerians the progress recorded in consolidating democracy, strengthening institutions and repositioning the country through various reform initiatives despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.
The SGF observed that with only ten days to the June 12 anniversary, members of the committee must immediately commence work to ensure the successful execution of all activities earmarked for the celebration.
He stressed that in line with the mood of the nation and the government's commitment to fiscal responsibility, this year's Democracy Day activities would be modest but purposeful.
Senator Akume announced that activities approved for the 27th Democracy Day Celebration include a World Press Conference on Thursday, June 4, 2026; Special Juma'at Prayers on Friday, June 5, 2026; a Special Inter-denominational Church Service on Sunday, June 7, 2026; a Democracy Day Public Lecture on Tuesday, June 9, 2026; Youth and Women-Oriented Programmes on Wednesday, June 10, 2026; a Presidential Broadcast on Friday, June 12, 2026; a Joint National Assembly Address by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday, June 12, 2026; and a Democracy Day Gala Night later the same day.
The SGF disclosed that the Inter-Ministerial Committee has been divided into various sub-committees to handle the different activities, adding that the terms of reference and membership of the sub-committees would be communicated by the Secretariat.

VP Shettima Lauds Space X Contributions To Nigeria's Emergency, Disaster Response
As largest satellite internet constellation donates specialised communication gadgets to NEMA
The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima @officialSKSM , has applauded the donation of specialised communication equipment to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) @nemanigeria by renown satellite internet service provider, Starlink @Starlink.
He described Nigeria’s partnership with Space X’s Starlink, one of the world’s largest satellite internet constellations, in enhancing emergency and disaster management in Nigeria as a collaboration that would improve NEMA’s response time and effective coordination, which he noted, “is vital in emergency interventions in the country”.
Senator Shettima stated this in Abuja on Tuesday when he received on a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa, a delegation comprising the technical team from NEMA and Space X led by the Director General of NEMA, Hajiya Zubaida Umar.
According to the Vice President, communication is the essence of humanity and during the period of emergencies and flood disasters, partnerships with Starlink can come in handy.
While commending the efforts of NEMA, Senator Shettima assured the management of Space X of the efficient and effective use of donated equipment by the staff of the agency at designated stations across the country.
Earlier in her remarks, the Director General of NEMA, Hajiya Umar thanked the tech giant for the donation of the high-speed, reliable satellite internet hardware and data plans to support emergency response and disaster management operations across Nigeria.
She said the communication gadgets comprising 91 standard and mini boxes will greatly address some of the critical challenges faced by NEMA in managing emergency in underserved or hard-to-reach areas across the country.
The NEMA DG disclosed that the agency will deploy some of the facilities to 50 designated flashpoints across the country, while its command-and-control centre will be re-equipped to improve its emergency intervention operations in the country.
On his part, the representative of Space X Starlink, Mr Peter Kroetger, commended Nigeria for its effective disaster preparedness and management despite challenges related to technology adoption and integration.
He expressed satisfaction with the structure at NEMA for disaster preparedness and emergency management, which, he noted, is key in the deployment of the Space X technology.
Also present at the meeting were the agency's Directors of ICT, Mr Justin Uwazuruonye; Search and Rescue, Air Cdre BA Usman; and Mary Owolabi from Space X, among others.

The Vice President, Senator @KashimSM, has implored state governments to accelerate business-enabling reforms to unlock the full potential of the $750 million World Bank-assisted State Action on Business Enabling Reforms (SABER) programme.
This, he said, has become necessary to attract domestic and global capital, enhance local infrastructure, and drive subnational economic growth.
Senator @KashimSM, who spoke on Tuesday during a stakeholder meeting on optimising the implementation of the SABER programme at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, noted that a fully implemented SABER programme would help create a more predictable and transparent business environment.
He also listed other benefits of the programme to include attracting domestic and foreign investment, strengthening private-sector confidence, reducing the cost of doing business, expanding digital and physical infrastructure, improving access to land and commercial justice systems, and enhancing the competitiveness of the states.
“These outcomes will translate into increased economic activity, higher productivity, job creation, improved internally generated revenue, and better living standards for our citizens,” he stated.
