While Astors are considering Lars - they're also considering a reunion with Springer and it's a move that would cost significantly less in terms of prospect capital - it really comes down to what player profile overall you desire for your lineup -

If that were to happen it would really leave Lars in the crosshairs of Philly - who I'm told has been one of the more aggressive suitors for Nootbaar -

The Cardinals high ask - and their attention on other things have been the delay here - Philadelphia seems to be holding out a little for Chaim to drop his price a bit - staring contest there for Lars - but this is real burning fire not just smoke - and it's less likely the Phillies budge - due to their real desire to be RH - and their initial call was for Ivan Herrera (who'd have no position there btw) #stlcards

Early morning calls made. #stlcards activity has been slow due to their exploration of what many would call a long-term buy, "a baseball trade," for a player they found surprising to be available over the past few weeks.

For their players, they were told they have multiple offers on the table—players like May, Noot, JoJo—and there's no concern of being left without a chair.

They'll likely see if there's a deal to be had, and if not, they'll trickle through their sell list "pretty quickly."

Through the past 24 hours, I've gotten the sense that the Cardinals and Chaim were looking to do something a little bigger for their core. It would require pieces the team wasn't prepared to deal, but it's an opportunity they're weighing heavily.

I asked how far the team will go before they start accepting offers for sell-offs and was told that by 11 a.m., if they don't feel there's traction on moving things on one end, then you'll start to see the dominos fall.

Also, so I'm clear here: they're selling multiple pieces regardless. From my understanding, this other deal would A) require names you might hold off on trading somewhere else and B) require a name or two that would make you consider trading the other.

I was also told that when it comes to these conversations, unless a larger deal like this long-term buy is made, the Cardinals do not plan on exploring moves for their C depth until after the lockout—after the season, as a winter move—as they believe they'll have more opportunities to use that depth to land a starter who may not be available in-season.

The Cardinals were shocked by the available names from Baltimore and Seattle's George Kirby, though I got a sense they might not believe the latter is truly available, but could be this winter, if there is one.

The Angels are another team the Cardinals are considering making a larger move with, and it's for one of their SP. With Mo being familiar with the Cardinals, during my conversations it seems there would be some comfort for Mo making that kind of deal early on, wanting to hit home runs early for the Angels. There's a lot of smoke there.

Lastly, there's Boston, who is less of a baseball trade—a familiar trade partner at this point—and the front office is aware of the jokes that will come with it. It's being laughed about in the front office as these talks continue, but the truth is there's a lot of SP prospects Boston has that the Cardinals front office likes. If they can land 1 or 2, then they are a preferred partner for a sell-sell and less of a baseball move.

You take a step back and you see a bunched-up group of Orioles, Seattle, Angels, and Boston, with SD, AZ, Phillies, Astros, TB, Rangers, and Cleveland all wanting to buy still at some level.

I was told 3 days ago - go look at the time stamps - I was the first on Holliday - and I was told - if he were available - Cardinals would be VERY INTERESTED - not only as a legacy player but their long term future at SS or 3B -

When I asked about Winn - they said they believe the cardinals view him as someone who could play 3B at an elite level and that he would be their first choice at moving - meaning a Holliday addition would involve him staying at SS - unless a Winn would be involved in any trade - which I was told could very well be if they went in that direction - as the Orioles were looking for ML level talent and not wanting a full rebuild. #stlcards

Cardinals fans who want to hold onto names like Doyle might like this type of trade - while it would include bats you hate to see moved - any pitching would likely be from the ML level - and as complimentary prices to complete a deal - like a Pallante, a Lehay - perhaps a Libby -

The Texas Rangers, SD Padres both teams have called on Cardinals pitching - including Dustin May - Rangers could be in the mix for either Nootbaar or Herrera - #stlcards

The trend I've gotten with any talks is many teams are shopping multiple pieces in conversations with St. Louis - while the front office has been pushing for Individual moves - the ability to package more tougher can help separate the Cardinals for a larger then expected return for rentals like Dustin May -

For example attaching a BP arm or position player with control - can solidly that value.

While a deal is possible soon as we know anything can happen - was told due to the amount of pieces St. Louis has - and their flexibility and where they fall as far at quality - middle pack on some - they may do best waiting it out unless a team gets aggressive. -

As far as what can go first - many expect JoJo to become to first chip fall - regardless if IL status - that's up for debate as I believe it will be Noot
