Listen to the testimony in the video below—it explains why public education has NOT received an increase in state funding. He is an expert. @ManoForStateRep @LaceyHullTx@TeamBettencourt
Paul Colbert, a former Texas House member and education budget chair - and maybe one of the few people in Texas who truly understand school finance —testified at the House Public Ed committee on Thursday. Colbert blew apart the narrative being pushed by Gov Abbott and @TPPF that schools have gotten an increase in funding.
“Traditional ISDs have not received an increase in state funding from actual state revenue sources for over a decade. The modest increases seen in recent years have primarily served as tax relief rather than new investment in education.”
Watch the entire video and it’s quite eye opening.

New: An army of online bots attacked Rep. Dustin Burrows as he campaigned in to become the next speaker of the Texas House last year, offering a new view of the race where Burrows had been cast as an establishment figure rejected by the grassroots:

Texas public schools are navigating a perfect storm of financial challenges: record inflation, the conclusion of crucial federal funds for post-pandemic recovery, declining enrollment, increased school safety requirements, and a host of funding pressures beyond the control of local school districts.
The Texas Legislature last increased per-student funding in 2019, forcing many local school districts to face dire and deep budget cuts. Rising inflation and subsequent adjustments mean districts effectively operate with $1,300 less per student than they did five years ago.

@DonnaHowardTX Let’s see, that’s the TEA report, the LBB and now this report that all agree that public school funding has decreased. Seems like a preponderance of evidence…
So, despite what some erroneously claim, funding for our public schools has eroded over the decade. Next session, the #txlege, and the Governor, must step up and ensure that we finally invest in our children who are the future of our state. 3/3
Education funding is down 12.6%. Of course, every ISD in the state already knew it was down. #txlege schools need full funding before we add funding private schools. @ManoForStateRep @TeamBettencourt@LaceyHullTx@joanhuffman
Today #txlege House members received a revised version of the Fiscal Size-Up chart on preK-12 funding since 2016, adjusted for compounded state population/inflation growth. Bottom line— funding is down 12.6%.
@RYHTexas According to a Kinder Institute study, 73% of Texas school districts don’t have enough money. How embarrassing for a state with a strong economy. Time to fully fund public education.
As Texas schools prepare for the 2024-25 school year, many school districts are struggling with budget deficits and cuts. Let’s push for the funding our schools need to thrive. 💸➡️ 🏫
