Hi I’m a top tier trad wife 👑 love Jesus, devoted wife & sahm, 2nd gen homeschooler, pastor’s kid, cook 20 meals/week from scratch, serve my local church, milk cows, avid gardener & preserver of food, catechize my children, frequent hostess, lover of the domestic arts. But… 1/x
@wrightca@TaintedSaint2 As far as internet access goes, we have 1 shared family computer that’s located in a public space & monitoring software installed. My kids also ask to use y he browser on my phone - same drill, tell me what they want to look up, no wandering off.
Well the time has come, we have crossed the proverbial parenting Rubicon … a phone has been ordered for the high schooler.
Please impart wisdom 🙏What’s worked well, what would you do differently, etc.
@MrsCMFrancis Fwiw we’ve had great success with Apple Watches the last 2-3 years! They’ve been perfect for the “mom I’m ready for a ride” stage of life! https://t.co/ka8ZaIAD27
@CristiTilden The watches are great bc harder to lose, huge pain to type on (so they're not very fun to use lol), I can control everything from my phone, limit access to approved numbers, etc. If they got better/consistent service out in the boonies, phone wouldn't be a consideration!
@MrsCMFrancis I’m going to start w a Alcatraz level locked down old iPhone + Gertrude app, no fun apps or social media. Parentpurchased to head off any “my phone, my rights”. Kid pitching in 50% of cost for line every month. Prepping a written contract, outlining expectations. See how it goes!
@JasonDrenon I’m sorry, that sounds rough.
I’m feeling ok about a phone that’s only able to call/text specific numbers, w no apps, social media or web access & locks down after 8 pm.
@presbyterianpew I love hearing this 🥹 Going to need this pep talk more often!
My inner Luddite says my children will never use more than a typewriter & a calculator. Alas, not realistic! So easing into w lots of oversight, boundaries & coaching is the best we can do.
My parents did this but with beans (stars are much cuter). I have a distinct memory of my mom taking a Lima bean out of my good jar because I was naughty. Wailed over that missing Lima bean for an hour lol.
I have a very willful 3 year old and we were really struggling to find out what worked with him, and we finally cracked the code.
Meet the star jars.
He can earn stars, but he can lose stars as well.
Nothing is more devastating than losing a star. Nothing is more motivating than the opportunity to earn a star. It’s shockingly effective.
