When I was serving in the Army, I deployed to Haiti for a humanitarian mission. I saw the absolute devastation, the rubble, the poverty. Death and violence were everywhere.

Yet, amidst the ruins, I met the most resilient, kind, and hardworking people you’d ever encounter. They had next to nothing, but they had each other. The villages took care of their own, working tirelessly and always dreaming of a safe place where they could raise their families without fear. I will never forget meeting these two amazing young boys standing with me in this photo.

Today, I am praying for the safety of our Haitian neighbors. They are being indiscriminately targeted by ICE and this racist, lawless administration. These people are our business owners, co-workers, and neighbors. They came here believing they could find sanctuary in the land of the free, they followed the rules, and they worked hard for the promise of the American dream.

Now, this administration is ripping their lives away while they salivate over @DHSgov’s racist photo ops, perp-walking Black men in shackles to satisfy their base. This is not just completely unacceptable, it’s absolutely sickening.

This is not who we are. We are America, and we must demand better from our leaders. The good guys don’t do THIS.

I get it. People love talking about presidential rankings. But all of the commentary about who was left out, who ranked higher than whom, is a distraction from the fact that the sitting president — during a war, in the lead up to the midterms, during a period of great anxiety — is casually posting about how he’s the greatest president ever. I get that defenders think it’s brilliant because it’s trolling. That’s pathetic in its own right. But a president trolling about how awesome he is when his approval rating is in the low 30s isn’t smart, clever, or wise. It’s sad and disturbing.
