Windhoek faces N$2.67 billion road maintenance backlog

The City of Windhoek has accumulated a road maintenance backlog of N$2.67 billion between 2020 and 2025 due to chronic underfunding, according to Acting Strategic Executive for Infrastructure, Water and Technical Services, Rowan Adams.

Adams said the city requires N$384 million each year to keep its road network in a functional condition, but actual annual allocations have fallen far short.

“The asset replacement value of Windhoek’s road network is N$15.4 billion,” he said. “However, maintaining this infrastructure at a functional standard requires N$384 million per year. In contrast, the actual annual budget has been far below this amount, contributing to a growing backlog of road maintenance, now estimated at N$2.67 billion.”

Though I am not Herero or Nama, I am Namibian. And as a Namibian, I carry the solemn duty to remember our people—those who endured unspeakable suffering during the first genocide of the 20th century.

The Herero and Nama genocide was not just a wound to two communities—it was a scar upon our nation’s soul. Yet, from the ashes of that horror rose a spirit so resilient, so unbreakable, that it birthed the Namibia we know today.

Today, we honour the children of this soil. We mourn their pain, we acknowledge their resilience, and we recommit ourselves to building a country rooted in justice, dignity, and truth.

Let this day remind us that remembrance is not about reliving the pain—but about uplifting the humanity that persisted through it. The Herero and Nama were not victims alone. They were farmers, mothers, warriors, and dreamers. They were Namibians.

I applaud the Governor of Khomas Region for submitting the final report on formalization of informal settlements in Windhoek. I also commend the line Minister of Urban and Rural Development for his support towards completion of this exercise. We are ready to implement the recommendations therein including, in the interim, piloting of precast and prefab technologies to benefit victims of shack fires and the elderly.

Namibia passenger traffic rises to over 102,000 in April

Namibia recorded 102,449 passenger arrivals and departures at airport terminals across the country in April 2025, up from 85,098 in March and 96,504 in April 2024, Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) reveals.

“The recorded increase in absolute passenger numbers indicates a continued rebound in air travel across the country’s airports,” the Namibia Statistics Agency stated.

Despite the rise in passenger traffic, growth in the Passenger Movement Composite Index slowed. The index rose by 20.4% in April, compared to 21.8% in March. On an annual basis, it increased by 6.2%.
