If our students are the #1 priority, then their response to our curricula, programs, etc. will greatly impact the culture. As educational leaders, how we respond (notice how I didn't say react) to the climate can have a BIG impact upon the culture. #ifonly4leaders
@kab2216 Sometimes, as new admins, we want to prove our leadership capacity by "getting things done" but stepping back from the work and learning about the organization and people in it builds a bigger, better team to get the real work accomplished #IfOnly4Leaders
A4: I thought I should have all the answers. I learned to tap into the incredible expertise and support systems around me. As Brene Brown says, “I’m here to get it right, not to be right.” #IfOnly4Leaders
Thank you @_bcpreston for facilitating this great discussion! As an aspiring administrator, I have learned so much tonight and feel inspired. I can't wait for the next #IfOnly4Leaders chat!
The next #IfOnly4Leaders twitter chat will take place in one month! July 16th 7:00 ETS, then every 3rd Thursday after that!!! Thanks for opening up, being vulnerable, asking questions, sharing experiences! That’s how we close the #LeadershipGaps!! Thank you & good night!!!
@_bcpreston A5 - Get to know your staff. Visit their classrooms often. Make yourself visible. You'll identify your "leaders" right away, but it is important that you build leadership capacity in all. This builds confidence. Do the work with your staff. #IfOnly4Leaders
A6 Tackle culture if deeply embedded beliefs & values are creating a toxic climate. Climate shifts, based upon leadership and social environment. Culture needs sustainable attention to foster vibrant work environments that makes people wake up excited for the work!#IfOnly4Leaders
Focusing on the positive promotes high morale in the building. In my classroom, I always try to look through the lens of what is going right instead of what is going wrong. Giving students positive feedback makes them want to work harder and continue to be great! #IfOnly4Leaders
Listen, listen, and listen some more. Focus on the positive. Build rapport by celebrating what's working, so you have the support of your staff when you work collaboratively to approach the areas in need of growth. And always, ALWAYS, openly praise your teachers. #IfOnly4Leaders
#IfOnly4Leaders A5: Be yourself (if not, staff will know immediately) lead with humanity, and treat everyone with respect (staff, parents, students, and your entire community)

@_bcpreston I believe that as a leader one mistake that we can make is sticking to what we know and what we believe to be true. Always welcome new ideas and viewpoints!
If building admin doesn’t take risks (and when it doesn’t go quite as planned, step up and take responsibility), staff certainly won’t...and students will miss out on some potentially amazing opportunities #IfOnly4Leaders
@mmoses526 Absolutely! There is so much growth that can only occur when that trust is present and very carefully cultivated. Excellent point. #IfOnly4Leaders
A4 - Not looking deeply enough. People will tell you want you want to hear when you're a new admin. Build trust. Let teachers know they can come to you *without repercussions* if they need to grow in an area. Frontloading this will pay off so much for everyone! @IfOnly4Leaders
A4 Coming in hot at the beginning-not recognizing that respect is earned, not guaranteed. Didn't take long to realize. Teachers are brutally honest. Build trust, build relationships first. Hard conversations are easier to have when there is a relationship in place #IfOnly4Leaders
