Through his latest Executive Order, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken a decisive step where his predecessors hesitated: the 30% of oil and gas revenue previously retained by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company will now be remitted directly to the Federation Account. This is a landmark reform in petroleum revenue management and accountability.

In simple terms, if NNPC is to function as a commercial concessionaire, it must compete on equal footing with other market players rather than operate with privileged retention.

Implication:
This change signifies a substantial increase in distributable revenue for the three tiers of government. The real challenge now lies with state governors: turning this fiscal windfall into measurable progress, prudent investments, and tangible benefits for the public.President Tinubu has done his part.
