Excited to see national attention on a program we launched at @P33Chicago to get #tech professionals working w/ students in #college#STEM classes. Richer, more relevant learning will produce more--and more diverse--graduates & #techtalent. #STEMeducation https://t.co/S9KKpMNj0N
@ESPNCFB in the #RedRiverRivalry game #OU just ran a fake FG in which the holder took the snap and threw it to the kicker who ran for a 1st down. But the holder was on a knee when he took the snap. Shouldn't it be down at that point given college rules? #CollegeFootball

New research: students w/ same HS preparation, intent to get a STEM degree, and success in initial college courses get #STEM degrees at diff rates based on race/gender. Several problems for colleges to solve. This is why @P33Chicago launched Strong Start. https://t.co/R0TDP8akKj
Honest question: where should we build power? What is the table where workers should get a seat? Congress is failing to keep up. States nibble at the edges. Meantime, a group of venture-backed and non-unionized companies will be making the decisions for us. #futureofwork 3/3
This article gets the BIG thing right: the economy now and in the future isn’t a natural phenomenon; people write the rules and make the decisions that determine who benefits and how. But a question and a quibble… 1/3
Quibble is that direct #robot displacement and mass unemployment is a red herring. The low pay, poor job quality, and disempowerment the authors rightly focus on are enabled and accelerated by #tech and #automation, including boring stuff like #RPA and staffing algos. 2/3
The biz-led Chicago Apprentice Network has been great at expanding #apprenticeships in the city, but most aren't registered (ok by me). And @Accenture, one of the CAN founders, commits to 20% of entry-level hires--incl tech--coming from its non-reg apprenticeship (awesome). 2/2
Tasty mix of optimism + sobriety re future of #apprenticeships from @ryancraigap. Key quote: "Apprenticeships are not bought, they are sold." The most important sell is to #tech employers, where apprentices remain scarce. Q: Do we care too much about @USDOL registration? 1/2
Apprenticeships are jobs and only employers are capable of creating them. So apprenticeships are the only tool in the education/training/workforce arsenal that educational institutions, think tanks, nonprofits, and governments can’t wield. New @Forbes

So powerful, so missed: the euphoria of shared voice, energy, movement, sweat, smell and joy. Special fucking time tonight with @puptheband and 2,000 Chicagoans at @therivierachicago #chicago#rocknroll https://t.co/3agQVfgTj5
Recommendations: Companies should open their internship hiring aperture; also, colleges should expand work-based learning experiences, incl unpaid #internships, to prepare underrepresented students for the paid-internship hiring moment. 3/3 #inclusion#highered#equity#talent
Unsurprising but clarifying data from @stradaeducation show that college students with paid #internships are more confident going into the job market, earn more after graduation & enjoy more career satisfaction. 1/3 #highered#skills#pathways#cteworks

Has anybody figured out how to have best of both worlds--talent from anywhere + a great #CareerDevelopment environment for young staff? Meantime, I worry companies will be under-developing younger staff to keep experienced engineers happy. That's bad news. 4/4 #wkdev@P33Chicago
Several conversations this week with Founders, C-suite, engineering VPs, and #techtalent leaders. Interesting natural experiment emerging on the tradeoff between access to a national #talent market vs value of informal learning and #mentorship for younger staff in office. 1/4
But while experienced talent prefers #WFH, more junior folks want an office experience for both social and--more critically--learning value. They want mentors and informal learning opportunities, and some have left full-remote environments to find that. 3/4
