@DianaJA76@garyseconomics Unfortunately that’s why Gary’s position is dangerous as it seems appealing. The issue is if only the UK implemented a wealth tax it would be disastrous as wealthy leave. It’s like net zero doesn’t reduce energy bills, you need all countries to adopt (which they won’t).
@AaronBastani We can’t just have a wealth tax in the UK or the wealthy people leave and we can’t make other countries have a wealth tax ie it doesn’t work. Like net zero, if every country doesn’t do it then no meaningful impact on emissions & Uk electricity becomes v expensive.
@DanNeidle@anthonyjevans Gary’s views are genuinely dangerous- Taxing wealth globally could make sense but if only the UK taxes wealth, we will nuke our economy and scare off the wealthy. Same as net zero - only UK adopting is destroying UK industry and hiking electricity for everyone.
@bphillipsonMP When we look back on this policy it will be the worst act of UK self harm in a decade (next to tax increases). I hope UK population can hold you to account for the damage to children forced to leave schools and eroding Britain’s Soft education power. Also your stats are lies.
@EddieBurfi She doesn’t win”. It’s amazing how stupid ideas gain traction because they are simple and lack understanding of markets and/or tax. If Billionaires leave it doesn’t mean they sell their properties, but we do lose UK spending. We also lose other uk taxes if non resident. 🤦♂️
Uk infrastructure sucks. Stuck on the #centralline which is currently delayed 10+ mins in a packed carriage due to a broken down train and will now miss my connection. Thanks @TfL .
@PizzaExpress For what it’s worth, I think it’s switching from olive oil to rapeseed oil. Our family probably used to consume 2-3 bottles per week but the new dressing is like water! Anyway, fingers crossed it gets changed back or you do an olive oil version (could be priced more?).
@PizzaExpress why have you changed your shop sold salad dressing recipe!?!? It has been my favourite for 20 years and the new version is so much worse!!
@LBC@mrjamesob This @C4Dispatches programme is so misleading it’s embarrassing. The crown estate and dutchies have complex histories but essentially all assets are not managed by Monarchy at all - and the profits of the Crown Estate are paid to the Govt to benefit the UK! Needs proper research!
@BladeoftheS There are so many real life examples of tax increases that have reduced tax take eg. Norway, Netherlands (increasing real estate tax). When will we start realising that populist policies like raising taxes on the wealthier, will actually most likely make the average person poorer
@Peston@DanNeidle PLEASE can you correct @Peston on this very misleading tax analysis. The profit is UNREALISED unless @Peston is proposing they should pay tax on unrealised gains or sell assets to pay tax!? Quite shocked this was published by someone as credible as Peston.
@DanielPriestley@DanielPriestley. Great thread. A final core UK product being diluted is UK education. British education is admired worldwide (mainly private schools and universities) and rich foreigners send their kids here helping us with soft diplomacy. This is sadly next on the list to go…
@matthewsyed@DanNeidle@matthewsyed interesting but radical tax reform could scare markets. Why don’t we start a national service where migrants (those on long term benefits) would serve 1-5 years improving the realm to maintain/become a UK citizen. We could dramatically improve infrastructure?
Do not buy a washing machine from @SamsungUK ! Over an hour call to customer service to hear the washing machine we bought 1.5 years ago for £750 that has rusted on clothes is not covered by the 2 year warranty (in their view). Faulty goods and terrible service! 🤬
@DanNeidle@DanNeidle to make this a fair and balanced discussion, shouldn’t it also be mentioned how the UK capital gains taxes compare to other countries (which are broadly similar) as we still need investment into the UK??
@steveanastasiou Thanks for this, very interesting series. Please could you go into detail as to what happened to real assets (vs financial assets) over the same period, in particular commercial and residential real estate.
