One is currently working for the people of Puntland. The other has worked to undermine the people of #Puntland. Yet because they share a tribal lineage, he thinks that gives him the right to speak on behalf of Puntland.

You would be surprised to learn that the person who believes his tribal lineage gives him the authority to speak for the people of Puntland is sitting in Minnesota, drinking Starbucks lattes, while having contributed to the destruction of federalism.

The other is a sitting minister in Puntland who has tirelessly worked for the people of Puntland and actually lives within Puntland.

Puntland is saying something very simple: the people of Puntland have the right to choose their own destiny and exercise their right to self-determination. They will not sit quietly behind an ideology that is hell-bent on destroying Puntland.

He is not a professor. He is not a political analyst. He is not a policy expert, an economist, or a strategist.

His most notorious contribution to Somali political discourse is a video in which he delivers what amounts to a morale-boosting speech to clan militia, invoking the atrocities committed against Darood civilians in 1991 as a Hawiye “victory” and asking how the supposed “loser” could later impose a constitution upon the “victor.”

And now PDRC, one of Puntland’s foremost research institutions, invites this man to our capital. To do what, exactly? Lecture Puntland on governance? Somali unity? Constitutionalism?

There are disagreements that belong in serious political discourse, and then there are lines that institutions claiming intellectual credibility should know better than to cross.

PDRC, this is a monumental insult to the very community whose name, capital and institutions give you your standing. You owe the people of Puntland an explanation for this disgraceful decision.

The contempt shown here will not simply be forgotten.

What has Turkey’s presence in Somalia actually brought to Puntland?

At a time when Puntland is sacrificing lives and resources in the fight against terrorism and piracy, serious questions are being raised about airstrikes alleged to violate the law and kill Somali youth.

Who authorized these airstrikes? Who made them lawful? Who is investigating the resulting casualties? Who will be held accountable if innocent people have been killed?

Does Puntland have the authority to know about, hold accountable, and prevent foreign operations that affect its people, security, and efforts to combat piracy?
