The narration of history that claims Afonja migrated to Ilorin at the same time with other migrants from the North and across the river Niger basin (peddled mainly by descendants of Jamas at Ilorin) is false.

Afonja was a four-generation dynasty at Ilorin.

His great grandfather…. Laderin was the first Governor of Ilorin…. He ascended the throne during the reign of Alaafin Ojigi and Bashorun Yamba. Laderin built the city and setup its administrative structures

Laderin's son…. Pasin… also ruled as Governor of Ilorin. He expanded its military powers to make Ilorin a very formidable warrior….. The Bashorun at his time was Bashorun Gaha…. The Bashorun was uncomfortable with Pasin’s rising profile… He sent an army to Ilorin to destroy Pasin’s military base…. In the latter part of the 1700’s…. Pasin escaped from Ilorin to a city called Ola…. Bashorun Gaha’s soldiers laid a siege on the city of Ola…. Pasin was captured and executed.

Pasin’s son, Alagbin ascended the throne of Ilorin and rebuilt its military base….

When Oyabi, (The third Are Ona Kakanfo) raised an army against Bashorun Gaha….Alagbin led a regiment of Ilorin army to reinforce the Kakanfo’s army…. Oyabi defeated the Kakanfo at Oyo in a nationwide insurrection against the Prime Minister…. His whole family was destroyed. There is a popular proverb that came about due to the sad end of Bashorun Gaha that goes…. "Bi o laya ko seka, sugbon bi o ba ranti iku Gaa ki o so oto."… This translates in English as ‘Let the wicked tyrant remember the death of Gaa and change his ways’

Pasin was the father of Afonja….. the fourth and last of the dynasty.

A surviving son of Bashorun Gaha returned from Bariba-land ( I believe this was during the reign of Alaafin Adebo). At this time, Oyo empire had become too big to contain from the center… most of the nobles and provincial governors had rebelled. Ojo came home was a power private militia of Bariba warriors.

Ojo claimed his mission as patriotic to the land his ancestors once ruled as Prime Ministers…. ( Ojo was not only the son of Gaha, but also the grandson of Bashorun Yamba who played a big role in the transformation of Oyo from a powerful city state into an empire)

Ojo used the pretext to avenge the death of his father and launched an invasion to destroy Afonja…. He succeeded in destroying many chiefs that were enemies of his father….and then set to lay a siege at Ilorin to avenge the role Afonja’s father (Alagbin) played in the insurrection that disgraced his father and destroyed his family.

His campaign against Afonja however failed. He defeated Afonja in battle but was not able to lay a successful siege on Ilorin.

An interesting point to note…. Legends of the Afonja dynasty did not end at his death... When the warriors from the North eventually settled at Ibadan with a mission to build it into a military fortress and a structured government, the first leader to emerge was a son of Afonja. His name was Oluyedun.

In 15 years, he had become Chairman and 49% owner of the Nigerian subsidiary of the American telecommunications conglomerate ITT.
