The UN General Assembly has endorsed the Equal Earth projection, a map that more accurately shows countries’ relative sizes. Unlike the centuries-old Mercator projection, which makes regions near the poles appear much larger and Africa relatively smaller, Equal Earth preserves countries’ true relative land areas.
🌍 The U.N. voted 164-1 to encourage a shift away from the Mercator map toward the Equal Earth projection, which better reflects countries’ true size.
🇺🇸 The U.S. was the only country to vote against it, calling the measure an “ideological agenda.”
Africa is about 14x larger than Greenland, despite how Mercator can make them appear.
