George Lucas spent 17 YEARS getting this museum built and its first movie premiere is not Star Wars, not some legacy franchise, but an ORIGINAL DreamWorks film rooted in Filipino mythology.

Even better, Forgotten Island premiered there ONE DAY after the museum opened to the public. 😭

A building dedicated to the history of visual storytelling opened its movie-premiere era by giving a new culture and a new story the spotlight.

That is actually a pretty perfect first film.

This week will be a big week for Filipino Animation 🥹 2 animated films will be showing starting Sept 23: one on global mainstream, one on a local indie festival. Forgotten Island 🏝 & Patay Gutom 🍔. 2 different stories, 2 different animation styles, the richness of Filipino talent to celebrate.

The Philippines has various creative talent & stories to tell ✨️ Unfortunately, not everyone gets the platform for that opportunity or support. There is still an ongoing stigma against art being a real profession & things got more challenging now due to the rise of AI. Creatives wonder if there is still a world for them & whether their work is still valued. It's not an easy world out there but creatives still show up & create. I, as a creative myself for as long as I remember, have witnessed & continue to witness it first-hand.

Just by the fact that these 2 films are about to be shown gives Filipino creatives hope that they still matter & their art still matters. Technology might keep on modernizing itself making us feel that creative work is replaceable but human art is remains meaningful despite the test of time. I'd like to think na coincidental lang na sabay ang showing ng both films but I feel like it's the universe telling us a message that art is still important in our society today.

So please, if you are able to, give both films some love & be amazed on how rich Filipinos' talent in the arts is. Filipinos can be filmakers. Filipinos can be storytellers. Filipinos can be animators. Filipino culture has a space into this world. Filipino art matters. We just have to support their voices & passion. Mabuhay ang sining ng Pilipino! 🫶🏼
