Travelling along Chittaranjan Avenue in Calcutta, you cannot miss the massivel three-storeyed yellow mansion with louvered green windows. Mutty Lall Seal’s Free College was built by merchant-philanthropist Mutty Lall Seal (Moti Lal Sil) in 1842 to provide education to Indians and as an alternative to the missionary educational institutions in the city.
Born in 1792 in a mercantile family in Colootola, Seal lost his father when he was five. An innate business sense helped him rise from the position of a clerk at Fort William to the richest merchant in Bengal. Seal’s first business venture was trading in bottles and corks for British beer importers. The huge profit from this business inspired him to forge partnerships with several British maritime traders. He traded in indigo, silk, sugar, rice, saltpetre and opium. He got into the export and import of goods, bought a dozen merchant ships and even introduced steamships for domestic trade in India. He kept on rolling the millions earned as investments in new ventures ranging from tea trade to banking, insurance to real estate. He opened freighter services between Calcutta and Sydney.
Dutta Bari on 3 Gaur Mohan Mukherjee Street was the ancesteral home of Narendra Nath Dutta (Swami Vivekananda). He was born here in 1863. The house was built by his grandfather sometime in the 1820s.
The Other Tagores
Raja Gopi Mohan Tagore (1760–1819) a was scion of the Pathuriaghata Tagore family and noted zamindar. He was son of Darpanarayan Tagore, who founded the Pathuriaghata branch of Tagore family. Fluent in Sanskrit, French, Portuguese, English and Persian he forged trade links with various communities. He was one of the founders and then Governor of Presidency College (as Hindu College) providing the second largest endowment. He was a close friend of Raja Raj Krishna Deb of Sovabazar Raj. He had begun the Tagore family's art collection with the assistance of the British artist George Chinnery, which was later expanded by his great-grandson, Prodyot Coomar Tagore. He also established the Shyamnagar Mulajore Kali Temple at Shyamnagar in 1802.
Paikpara Rajbari in Belgachia in north Calcutta was purchsed by Dwarkanath Tagore of the Jorashankho branch of the family in 1823 to entertain European guests and business partners. The second floor was added to it in 1835. The house was sold to the Sinha of Kandi Raj in 1856.
Maharaja Nabakrishna Deb (1733–97) established the Shobhabazar Rajbari complex from 1755 onwards. The first palace (on the right) by his adopted son Raja Radhakanta Deb. A second one called Choto Rajbari was built forhis biological son Raja Rajkrishna who was born late in life.
There is an architechtural gem in almost every corner of north and central Calcutta. So today, in a small break from focusing on individual buildings we will randomly walk around the Vivekanand Road.
We start with this hidden gem tucked away in Madan Mitra Lane.

Two Images, Two Untold Story; Make it go VIRAL:
1. An Afghan muslim child, who escaped the Sharia controlled Taliban's terror and arrived happily in "Islamophobic Bharat (India)🇮🇳", now residing peacefully & enjoying all the human rights
2. An Afghan Muslim refugee child in Islamic Republic of Pakistan, forced to flee from Pakistan. Pakistan demolished the houses of Afghani muslim migrants and forced them to immediately vacate the Islamic country.
Where is Brotherhood, Where Is Ummah? Where is radical Muslim world? Why aren't they organizing rallies against Pakistan in this case?
In this case, they won't say anything and will organize daily rallies in support of HAMAS terrorists, propagate hate against Kafirs (non-muslims)
Coz their sole purpose is to find any opportunity to fuel unrest and violence in the country !

Sources tell me the “filthy questions” revolves around multi lakh rupee bills. Pre-lunch she spoke for 2.5 hours & had been asked to behave & not shout at the chairperson. Her entire testimony was a personal attack on Dehadrai. Post lunch the moment the committee started taking out physical evidence and grilling her, on the exact same personal points she had raised - she ran.
