@moerccpl To safeguard the environment and prevent the harmful impacts of exotic tree species, the Ministry has issued a directive banning the importation of exotic trees into Puntland.

Today we held an important meeting at the Puntland State House, chaired by Acting President & VP H.E. Ilyas Osman Lugatoor, to address the escalating threat of sand-dune encroachment along our coastal belt.

The Ministry of Environment presented new findings showing severe impacts in Jiriiban, Godobjiraan & Garacad — sand dunes burying grazing lands, cutting off roads and transport routes, surrounding homes, damaging community infrastructure, and endangering livelihoods across entire villages. Puntland’s coastline, which forms part of Somalia’s 1,600 km coast, faces increasing risk — and the people living in these areas stand to lose their livelihoods if action is not taken.

A joint committee bringing together Government, Parliament, the Garacad Port Committee & local community leaders will now spearhead coordinated, long-term action to protect our coastal communities. The Puntland Ministry of Environment will lead the technical response and coordination.
