π§΅How to migrate to Mastodon step-by-step
What is Mastodon? It is a social media app that many people are moving to instead of Twitter. It is like Twitter in some ways, and different in others.
It is a non-profit and volunteer project so not as polished. But it works well.
@SusaninLangside@JohnSwinney@ScotGovFM Can you drop the plans to *remove* a cycle lane on Gordon St now there's more room? Was an incredible backslide on your official strategy. Could instead have a world class bike-train commuter (30% of commuters in the netherlands!) experience with large scale parking.
Have you responded to @TranScotland's consultation yet? π£οΈ

@mr__do I've tried it and it mostly seems to work. My worry is that it follows the twitter model: venture capitalists are funding it, and down the line they will want to make a profit and it will go the way of facebook, twitter, and every other capitalist social media

Mastodon is at 1.8m monthly active users and has real search now. No question that building a new account is hassle, but the alternative is handing power to Musk which is worse. Also we could wake up one day to find this place doesn't work any more.
He's trying to trap us here by holding our "social graph" (follows and followers) hostage.
All apps are utter shit, it's the people that make them worthwhile.
Stop people finding their friends elsewhere = they're trapped in Elon's Fun House. Or so he hopes.
Musk's decided to charge for the twitter API so all the fun bots are about to die.
This week is also your last change to use movetoREMOVETHISdonREMOVETHIS[dot]org to automatically find your twitter friends elsewhere
The #GoBike Strathclyde cycle campaign has had a hiccup and ended up without a committee. There should be an EGM in March to sort this out. I for one will be stepping up.

My personal rule for Twitter now is that I will not ordinarily contribute value to it. I will tweet criticism and explainers about Twitter, and I will promote alternatives to Twitter. That's all Elon is getting from me.
Big thanks to Elon Musk honestly. Although he misleadingly frames it as "your" fault, what he is explaining here is that Twitter's algorithm is designed to pour oil on every fire it sees.
Some of us have been pointing out how dangerous that is for years now.
We've heard a lot about disinformation in the last few years, but far too little about the structural problems with corporate social media.
They've done huge damage to our society, and it's time for change. Luckily, one deranged billionaire has made that really really obvious.
