“You can’t ask for a piece of land, if one wants to take it by force that is another case. I own my territory, you own yours.” By H.E HSM. Full stop ✋.
BREAKING: The President of Somalia @HassanSMohamud renewed calls for “good neighbourliness” with Ethiopia, in remarks at a mosque in Mogadishu, Friday.
“I call on Ethiopia for good neighbourliness, we have one choice - to live in peace, maintain friendship, cooperate on mutual interests - the Somali government is ready for that,” he said.
He reiterated his position as the president of Somalia that he will not accept the MoU signed between Ethiopia and Somaliland.
“A Somali territory cannot be exchanged for a [stake] in a company like Ethiopian airlines, Ethiopian Telecom, GERD…even if you combine them we cannot swap for a territory,” he said.
“You can’t ask for a piece of land, if one wants to take it by force that is another case. I own my territory, you own yours.”
He accused Ethiopian leaders of “misleading” their people.
“Don’t mislead your public and tell them you got sea from Somalia. It’s not going to happen. It has not happened yesterday, it won’t happen today. Don’t disappoint your people.”
Mohamud said the notion that Ethiopia cannot develop without access to sea is not true.
He said many in the world do not have access to sea, but still are thriving and moving forward.
Ethiopia and Somaliland both defended the deal. Somaliland urged the international community respect the MoU. “No part or country will be affected by this MoU,” Ethiopia said.
Mohamud thanked international organisations and countries who supported Somalia’s position.
Our history will remember you, we’ll standby you when you need us, he said.
Somalia wiped out nearly 90% of external debt after reaching Completion Point under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries Initiative. This allows 🇸🇴 to access external financing to invest in key areas like education & job creation to improve Somali lives.

A hearty hambalyo/congratulations from @worldbank to President @HassanSMohamud & the people of #Somalia as they officially join the East African Community (@jumuiya) today.
Somalia inches closer to its HIPC Completion Point with more opportunities for trade & development.
I salute and support our president and soldiers who are at the battlefield and taking the fight to the extremists.
When I returned to Mogadishu in 2009 Al Shabaab — the most deadly extremist outfit in Africa — controlled more than 80% of #Mogadishu, Somalias (then devastated) capital as well almost all major cities and towns of rest of south-central #Somalia;
Today Mogadishu is free, safe and rising.
Now the liberation efforts is happening at the far flung districts of Somalia such as #Elbur, where 12000 gallant @SNAForce led by Prez @HassanSMohamud are facing off the enemy.
We should support president’s efforts and the troops.
Now is the time to close ranks and keep eye on the prize: a Somalia free of Al Shabaab terrorism.
As my friends @JustAwHirsi, @HShPrez2Ware and @MPMursalKhaliif would say, everything else could wait.
