"As a construct, history is too often revised to match contemporary views. It has been said that each generation must rewrite history in order to understand it. The opposite is true. Moderns revise history to make it palatable, not to understand it." - T. R. Fehrenbach
@St_Rev If something goes on the site of a former dry cleaners and they haven’t completely replaced not just the underlying soil but the neighbors one has to assume somebody got away with something. If a cleaners is replaced by anything other than another cleaners I’m suspicious
@St_Rev I used to do a lot of groundwater, and even just by basically existing a drycleaner is pretty much guaranteed to have an amazingly toxic plume in any soil it sits on even if they are reasonably careful and conscientious about it.
I kind of want to defend Jarvis here and point out that this spirit in a field grade officer is the sort of thing that has always given Britain a certain degree of glory: theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die, Into the Valley of Death rode the Six hundred

@kisstheblade_@HarrierMagnus What sin! It is very advanced Lutheranism and regularly gets said these days by self proclaimed atheists. It means what a shame or that’s terrible or even just Too bad!
@kisstheblade_@HarrierMagnus My father was born in the US but he was practically a cartoon German of the old school. @eigenrobot In Alistair Reynolds rather good sublight speed sci fi novel “Revelation Space” Epsilon Eridani has a relatively awesome francofuturist phase in the 24th century, that is so far axay in the future that I could imagine a French comeback. One can always hope.
@RichardBratby@lijukic Even ai makes jokes about this, I had an ai conversation around Christmas trying to identify some Czech statuary an the ai was: how am I supposed to know they all look alike
