He came down in hostile ground.
Bandits on his trail.
Gunfire behind him.
A fractured neck.
A strained leg.
About 30 kilometres of bush, night, and prayer.

He hid.
He turned.
He used the compass on his phone.
He refused to be taken.

By morning, Nigeria still had her pilot.

That is a man who walked out of a crash that was meant to finish him.

THE GENERAL WHO HELPED CHANGE HOW THE NIGERIAN ARMY TOLD ITS STORY

Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman (Rtd) did not begin his military career as an officer.

He began as a recruit.

He joined the Nigerian Army in 1983 and later pursued Mass Communication at Bayero University, Kano, graduating in 1991. The following year, he received a Direct Regular Commission as a Lieutenant.

That combination of military experience and communication expertise would eventually shape one of the most recognizable public voices of the Nigerian Army.

His career took him through command, staff and instructional appointments, as well as United Nations peacekeeping operations.

But his defining chapter came in 2015.

At a time when Nigeria was fighting one of its most difficult counter-insurgency campaigns, then Colonel Usman became the Acting Director of Army Public Relations.

Suddenly, he was not just speaking for the Army.

He was helping Nigerians understand what was happening on the battlefield.

Through regular briefings and public statements, he communicated military operations, developments, casualties, successes and challenges during the fight against Boko Haram.

In December 2016, he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General.

He eventually served two terms as Director of Army Public Relations before voluntarily retiring from active service in 2019, bringing more than three decades in uniform to a close.

But retirement did not silence his voice.

He continued contributing to national security, strategic communication and military public relations, including through the Nigerian Army Resource Centre and academia.

His career tells an important story about modern warfare:

The battle is not fought only with guns and ammunition.

It is also fought in the information space, where credibility, clarity and communication can shape how a nation understands the war being fought in its name.

From recruit to general, Sani Kukasheka Usman built a career at the intersection of military service and strategic communication.
