Hi everyone! My names Moira and I’m a PhD student at @UofG_SES. I’m working on a method to use biofilms as a pesticide monitoring tool in aquatic ecosystems. @LaurentianSETAC#LaurentianPrairieResearch🧵 (1/7)
Excited to be back showcasing research on #CEWtweetyourthesis summarizing effects of #microplastics on #unionid mussels, this time centering on adults and microplastic ingestion! This section of my thesis informs how microplastics could bioaccumulate in these bivalves (1/3)
Just so happen to be attending a conference in Ottawa next week? Well, you’re in luck! We’re teaming up with @toxontap_UofS to bring you a Pub Night next Tuesday in Ottawa. Join us as we hear from Dr. Ryan Prosser @UofG_SES chat about Microplastics! #LSETAC
My #research looks at the risk of microplastics on #unionid freshwater mussels . Species are distributed across Ontario but we know little about how tiny pieces of plastic can impact their way of life #CEWtweetyourthesis (1/3)
Congratulations to our very own Dr. Ryan Prosser (@RyanPros) for being one of the eight #UofG professors honoured with the 2022 U of G Research Excellence award! 🎉

@sjwallace06@LaurentianSETAC@SETAC_PNC Hey Sarah, I didn’t realize that you used chicken eggs as a back up species due to covid- that is SO cool! Was there any other bird species you were looking at using as a covid alternative before you narrowed it down to chickens? Thanks and great thread 😄
@sjwallace06@UofG_SES@LaurentianSETAC Very cool! You must have fantastic ID skills, I’ve heard it’s super tough to do!! I’d love to address this in later years of my thesis :)

@sjwallace06@UofG_SES@LaurentianSETAC I'd expect the biofilm community to change depending on which pesticides are present (for example, rivers with high herbicide exposure may just have herbicide-resistant microbs found in the biofilm, and less diversity). Thanks for the q and was lovely meeting u yesterday! (2/2)
@sjwallace06@UofG_SES@LaurentianSETAC Hi Sarah! I'm not planning on characterizing the taxa in biofilm this field season. This is bc it requires alot of biomass to do this, and I need as much biofilm as I can get for pesticide analysis and some benthic invert feeding tests I'm planning on doing in the lab (1/2)
@JonathanChallis@UofG_SES@LaurentianSETAC However, the $$ required for taking multiple samples and distance to all my field sites restricts that. In later field seasons, I'm planning to deploy DGT passive samplers alongside biofilm samplers which may give a better picture of water concentrations. Thanks a lot for the q!
@JonathanChallis@UofG_SES@LaurentianSETAC Hi Jonathan! I'm planning on calculating the bioconcentration factors for pesticides found in biofilm (a ratio of the conc found in biofilm to the conc found in the ambient water). Ideally, I'd take multiple water samples over the biofilm sampler deployment period... (1/2)
Hey there pal, do you like science? freshwater lakes? tadpoles? Do you like characterizing the effects of crude oil exposure on wood frog development? Welp, that’s specific but turns out I do! Follow along for an educational experience #LaurentianPrairieResearch@SETAC_PNC 1/11
@loveofstreams Thanks so much Christine!!! It feels like a bit of an art project haha. I had a few thefts last field season and had quite a few go missing... hopefully mine will turn up too like yours!
