@Makerere School of Public Health is hosting the three-week Joint Advanced Seminar One (JAS 1) for the 11th Cohort of @CARTAfrica Doctoral Fellowship, bringing together 20 doctoral students from across Africa. Below, Ms. Ochuko Maureen Orherhe from @OAUniversity in Nigeria shares insight and experience from the first week of the training.
With the new cohort, the total number of fellows enrolled into the CARTA fellowship program since 2011 is now 265, with over 180 graduates.
#Cohort11 fellows will be undertaking diverse doctoral programs in our partner institutions across Africa. Notably, the @@Somali_NU has received two fellowships, with mentorship support from @Makerere.
🙌 We are immensely grateful to @Sida & @oak for their support in making this cohort a reality! This investment in research capacity strengthens the continent’s ability to generate evidence-based solutions for pressing challenges.

Currently, #Cohort11 is participating in Joint Advanced Seminar 1 (JAS1), hosted by @MakSPH, from March 3 – 21, 2025. The intensive three-week program enhances critical thinking, strengthens technical skills, and builds essential research competencies, laying a strong foundation for the fellows’ PhD journeys.
At the official opening, @RhodaWanyenze, Dean of @MakSPH, encouraged participants to embrace the journey ahead with resilience and confidence, stating: "We must be strong and master the strength to speak up for things that matter to us. We need to be part of the change that is needed."
