🌌 Scientists Discover a Cosmic Structure 60 Times Larger Than the Milky Way

Astronomers have identified one of the largest structures ever seen in the known universe — a mysterious cosmic filament stretching over 1.3 billion light-years, roughly 60 times larger than the Milky Way Galaxy.

This titanic formation, called the “Giant Arc,” was first reported by scientists in 2021 and later confirmed through deep-space observations using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). It’s located about 9.2 billion light-years away in the constellation Boötes.

🔭 The Giant Arc is composed of galaxies, gas, and dark matter forming a vast curved wall — a massive filament of the cosmic web, the large-scale structure that connects clusters of galaxies across the universe.

What makes this discovery so shocking is that it challenges the “cosmological principle” — the idea that matter in the universe is evenly distributed on the largest scales. Finding something this huge suggests the cosmos might be less uniform than we thought.

🧠 In simple terms: This “arc” is like a cosmic bridge linking hundreds of thousands of galaxies across billions of light-years — a structure so vast it questions our current understanding of how the universe is built.
