EARTH IS ABOUT TO TAKE A DIRECT HIT FROM SOLAR STORMS

Multiple Earth-directed coronal mass ejections are now expected to begin arriving, setting the stage for an active stretch of space weather through the holiday weekend. If conditions come together, the impacts could include stronger geomagnetic activity, northern lights reaching farther south than normal, and minor disruptions to radio communications, GPS, and satellites.

The exact strength of the impacts won’t be known until the solar storms reach Earth, making this one of those events many skywatchers will be watching closely.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued by the NWS for parts of Idaho and Montana as heavy, wet snow is expected above 6,500 feet from Saturday evening into Monday morning.

🏔️ Some mountain areas could see:

4–8 inches (10–20 cm) of snow
Up to 12 inches (30 cm) on the highest peaks
Up to 16 inches (40 cm) possible in the Anaconda Pintler Mountains

The areas affected include higher elevations around the Bitterroot/Sapphire Mountains, Lemhi County, Skalkaho Pass, Nez Perce Pass, Lemhi Pass, and other backcountry locations.

If travel is absolutely necessary, consider taking
a winter storm kit along with you, including such items as tire chains, booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing. Also take water, a first aid kit, and anything else that would help you survive in case you become stranded.
