Sometimes, humanitarian access is limited by geography. But when barriers are man-made, it is people affected by armed conflict who pay the price, leaving humanitarian personnel unable to reach those who need help most.

“I go [to school] to learn, because when I grow up, I want to become a journalist,” says Shaymaa, 14, amid escalating threats to safety and access to education in the West Bank.
UNICEF and partners are providing remedial and catch-up education, psychosocial support and protective measures to access school across the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
Children’s right to education must be protected.
📍Nigeria | Twelve years, a spanner, and memories that have never faded. That is how Umaru remembers his cousin, Buba Boboi, who went missing amid the armed conflict.
Buba is one of thousands of people still missing in Nigeria. As of July 2026, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement was handling 17,000 active tracing cases of missing persons across the country.

For people living through armed conflict, violence, loss, displacement and uncertainty can affect mental health long after the immediate danger has passed, while access to care remains limited.

When roads are inaccessible, unsafe or blocked, humanitarian personnel may be unable to reach people who urgently need support.
They must be able to do their jobs safely and without fear for their lives.
Attacks against humanitarian personnel must never be normalized.

After World War II, the world made a promise: even in war, there are limits we must never cross. That promise became the Geneva Conventions, a universal commitment to protect civilians, the wounded, prisoners of war and humanitarian workers, among others.
Today, with over 130 armed conflicts worldwide, twice as many as 15 years ago, these rules are under immense pressure. Over 110 countries have joined the Global Initiative on international humanitarian law to strengthen commitment to the rules that limit suffering in war.
The Geneva Conventions do not protect the powerful. They protect people caught in war. And upholding them is the responsibility of every country on Earth.

The laws of war are not meant to exist only on paper; they must be enforced to save lives. Intentionally attacking civilians or civilian property is not allowed.
Even wars have limits.
When we look away, red lines move.
ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric warns that repeated tolerance of violations is eroding the rules that protect humanity in war.
