@ianbremmer I get your doubts, but Venezuela’s future won’t be decided by fear/coercion. After 26 years, Venezuelans have learned hard lessons about power, accountability and responsibility. There’s a real domestic opposition and millions committed to rebuilding a free, functioning country.
@RepThomasMassie On refugees: Venezuela is already producing millions of refugees because of state collapse. Doing nothing hasn’t prevented displacement. Long-term stability after a transition is how you reduce refugee flows — and allow Venezuelans to return home.
@RepThomasMassie Respectfully, this frames sanctions enforcement as “war,” which it isn’t. Congressional authorization is required for sustained hostilities — not for enforcing sanctions or interdicting trafficking networks. As a U.S. Representative, you’re well aware that distinction matters.
@RepThomasMassie It’s also inaccurate to compare Venezuela to Afghanistan, Libya, or Iran. Venezuela has a clear democratic opposition, existing civil institutions, no sectarian or religious war, and a large diaspora ready to return and rebuild.
@ChrisMurphyCT Sanctions only work if they’re enforced. The U.S. has legal authority to enforce sanctions on the Maduro regime - that’s not “war.” Venezuela’s collapse impacts migration, crime, and regional stability, so claiming there’s no legal or national-security justification is inaccurate
