A Session starts when someone loads a page and ends after 30 minutes of inactivity. GA records a new session every time someone visits your website. Even if you leave a page and come back anytime later, it counts as a new session.

What everyone thinks it is: When someone leaves your website without taking any action.
What it actually is: Any session that triggers only one request to GA's server. (A visitor's initial page view is one request).
