Summary, T20, Lord’s: Kent beat Middlesex by 27 runs.
Kent beat Middlesex at Lord’s in the first match of this season’s T20 Blast competition. It was a really good performance from Kent with bat, ball and in the field and early signs are that the side might be strong enough to get through the group and then who knows..
Kent won the toss and batted first. Bell-Drummond, Muyeye and Crawley got Kent off to a flyer. Bell-Drummond made 26 off 12, Muyeye 38 off 25, Crawley 36 off 26. They took Kent to 70-1 after 6 overs at the end of the powerplay. When Muyeye was the second wicket to fall, Kent were 91-2 after 8.2 overs.
That brought Billings to the crease. He took a couple of overs to get going as Kent faltered, scoring just 9 runs in 3 overs.
But Billings then played an incredible innings. He scored 84 not out from 37 balls with 9 4's and 5 6's. Indeed he scored 84 out of 117 after he came to the crease. Others faltered around him, Joe Denly and Benjamin were both out for 0. Evison couldn’t get the ball off the square and having used up 12 balls in making just 5 runs, he was retired out to allow the big hitting Rogers to come in and Rogers finished the innings with a boundary to justify the decision.
Kent were in the driving seat. My winviz for a Kent victory at half way was 85%.
Middlesex got off to a good start though. Rossington, back with Middlesex after 12 years away, with Holden and du Plooy took the home side to 65-1 after 6 overs. At the halfway stage, it was 105-2 after 10 overs. 104 to win in 10 overs, and it was anyone’s game.
Rossington kept going but Kent then kept taking wickets and the Middlesex challenge fell away. By the time Rossington was out for a brilliant 79 from 43 balls, Kent were virtually home and dry. In the end, Kent won by 27 runs, a pretty big margin in T20 terms. Without Rossington’s brilliant knock, Kent would have won by a much bigger margin.
The Kent bowling was mostly good with Rogers, Lintott and Milnes particularly impressing. Rogers took 4 wickets, 4-39, his best figures for Kent. Jake Lintott on his Kent debut was excellent with 2-25. He looks a very good loan signing and one Kent may want to turn into a permanent signing. Milnes bowled well with 2-38.
And the Kent fielding was excellent, sharp, and with superb catching, including 2 great catches from Muyeye and one from Rogers.
An enjoyable night at Lord’s for Kent. Middlesex are probably the weakest side in the group, but this was a good Kent performance. On to Canterbury on Monday afternoon.
