These results highlight the importance of limiting artificial light at night (ALAN) to protect populations of threatened seabirds such as Leach’s Storm Petrels, particularly during the peak stranding period of September through October.

Power down for Petrels! @MemorialUSci Student Tori Burt presented her study @PacificSeabirds’ 2023 annual conference in San Diego, CA, finding that turning off lights significantly reduced the number of Leach’s Storm Petrel strandings at a mass stranding site in Bay de Verde, NL.

Bob Hennebury ATVed from just east of Pt May to Lord's Cove on the southern Burin Pen and counted 257 dead seabirds. Mostly murres, 7-8 gannets, 7-8 gulls, 6 puffins and some razorbills!

Last night I captured one of my best images to date. Probably the single most important event in a Guillemot's life. Unable to yet fly, a 3-week-old chick leaps off the cliff, following its dad who will teach it how to fend for itself out at sea over the coming weeks.
