Every year in July, a friend, also a Nalanda Mitra, an advocate based in Delhi, sponsors a new laptop for one of the Nalanda students in the memory of her mother. She has been doing this for one woman student from Nalanda since last 5 years. But this year, I made a request to her. To give this time to a male student. She happily agreed.

Meet Vishal Kannake, student of Nalanda 2024-25 batch who just got through TISS PG entrance. Although he is just one among many who got through this year. But this is not why I am sharing his story.

His is something unique. Vishal came and joined Nalanda along with his younger brother Mohan 4-5 years back. But he left the classes after few days. Though his younger brother Mohan kept studying with us. When asked I was told that Vishal got a job somewhere and that is why he left. I also forgot after that. But later when his younger brother got selected to a top university, I came to know that Vishal left studies and started working as a delivery boy so that his younger brother can continue his studies.

I was little surprised and told Mohan to ask him to come back and study, I am there to support. I have supported so many students, paid their fees and even helped their family members in crisis. But both brothers refused to take support. Vishal kept working and supporting his brother and family.

Last year, after a gap of almost 4 years, once his younger brother graduated, Vishal rejoined the classes and in his free time, kept working as a delivery boy. He was one of the most punctual and hardworking students in the batch.

Just a week back, I got his call. He said sir and started crying inconsolably. I panicked. Kept asking what has happened. If a student calls like this I know something has gone wrong and I will have to firefight. It has been such for years now. So my first reaction is always of panic. He kept crying and at last, with great difficulty, he could say, ‘I have been selected sir’ . I was so happy to hear that. I have students who have struggled a lot and succeeded but to sacrifice 4 years for your sibling without taking any support from us is something truly remarkable. He is truly a gem of a person and I feel blessed to have such a student.

Very rarely I share stories of my students. Because I believe it is their story to share. Not mine. Am just happy to rejoice at their succcess and move on. But I took liberty in sharing his story. I have promised him that Nalanda will take care of everything during his academic years. No one has deserved this more than him.

Am also thankful to my friend who sponsors such support to our students since many years. We both keep it secret. But not today. Not for Vishal.
