Just got back from #Benue where I visited Mega IDP Camp, home to over 27,000 people. @unfpanigeria with generous support from the Government of Japan under the leadership of Benue State, recently established an integrated #SRH and women and girls safe space.

Listening to mothers who recently safely delivered their babies at the facility was a powerful reminder of the true nature of lifesaving services we provide. Their smiles said it all!…

@unfpa comprehensive support for Benue includes:

✅Emergency Reproductive Health Kits targeting some 110,000 persons
✅Capacity building of nurses and midwives through a collaboration with the Benue College of Nursing Sciences.
✅Digital skills literacy and marketing skill targeting internally displaced women and girls and host communities
✅Peace building and social cohesion in communities by women led organisations and youths.

The Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, affirms that women have the power to effect positive change, challenge harmful norms, and create a brighter and more equitable future for all. This statement was made at the opening ceremony of a two-week training programme organised by LASU in collaboration with the United Nations Population Funds ( UNFPA) and the Centre for Response and Prevention of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (CRPSGBV).

The training, themed "TRAINING OF TRAINERS ON: GENDER BASED VIOLENCE IN EMERGENCIES (GBVIE)", commenced on Monday, 15th April 2024 at the Femi Gbajabiamila Conference Centre, Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos.

During her welcome address at the opening ceremony, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, who was ably represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Adenike Omotunde Boyo expressed sincere gratitude to UNFPA Nigeria for their steadfast commitment to promoting gender equality, protecting the rights of women and girls, and addressing the root causes of gender-based violence. The partnership and support of UNFPA have been instrumental in the success of the training program, and LASU is truly honoured to collaborate with such a renowned organisation.

The professor of physiology commended the participants for their dedication, passion, commitment to learning, and growth. Their decision to engage in this important training initiative demonstrates their willingness to be agents of change in their communities and to stand up against all forms of gender-based violence.

She further encouraged the individuals present to use the opportunity to celebrate their achievements, share their insights, and reaffirm their commitment to ending gender-based violence in emergencies. In her words, "Together, we have the power to effect positive change, challenge harmful norms, and create a brighter and more equitable future for all."

The Acting Director of CRPSGBV, Dr Igot Ofem, expressed gratitude to the management and UNFPA for their support and partnership in making LASU the first batch of trainers. These trainers will then train others from higher academic institutions in the South West Zone of Nigeria.

She asserted that the training was born out of LASU's passion for its students, staff, and community in building a safe space for all. The institution has zero tolerance for sexual and gender-based violence and will not relent in curbing the perpetrators of these unlawful acts.

She recalled that on the International Women's Day, a Mentor-Mentee Platform was formed, and the need to train the Mentors and staff arose to fully equip them for the job. This initiative led to the "Training of the Trainers". At the end of the two-week training, LASU, in collaboration with LASU Consult and @UNFPANigeria, will be running the GBV Course in LASU, with the trained individuals serving as facilitators.

The UNFPA Team Lead, Mr Christian Sabum Macauley, (Humanitarian Coordinator/Head of Office, Maiduguri sub-office), stated that UNFPA is the foremost UN Agency mandated to ensure access to essential Reproductive Health services and protect the rights and dignity of women and girls against Gender-Based Violence.

He mentioned that UNFPA has established a strong coordination system for GBV with a mechanism to build the capacity of national partners. In 2019, a well-structured partnership was established with the American University of Nigeria (AUN) Yola, where the Director of the Centre for Response and Prevention of Gender-Based Violence of LASU, Dr. Igot Ofem participated. Her experience in Yola energised her to ensure the replication of the course in LASU, leading to the partnership between UNFPA and LASU.

There was a panel discussion moderated by @mooktharr on the UNFPAs work with young people around GBV, Digital Literacy and Youth Empowerment.

A young teenager from Konduga LGA in Borno State by name Hauwa Bukar shared her story on how @UNFPANigeria have been of great help to her by giving her the platform and opportunity to learn from the UNFPA digital literacy training. This has empowered her and she now has access to a safe space which has changed her life for good.

With the aid of the program, Hauwa has furthered her education.

@yasmin_buba also shared the challenges and barriers young people face accessing SRHR and GBV services in the northeastern part of Nigeria. It was educating and enlightening
