The Atlantic, drawing on more than 40 current and former officials, FBI employees and congressional staff, reports that FBI Director Kash Patel fields an unusual number of White House calls each day demanding updates, and that requests for election-related probes in states including Arizona, Florida, New Jersey and Ohio came from the White House. One former FBI official says he heard Patel say he has to do this for the White House. The White House says Stephen Miller interacts with all law enforcement agencies regularly and calls the claim that it dictates who is investigated or charged false.

The FBI disputes the account and cites a 500 percent increase in election-related investigations and arrests this year. The Atlantic reports the effort has produced little, with agents told to look harder when they find nothing, and Patel has sued the magazine for $250 million over earlier reporting. Four weeks before the midterms, who the FBI answers to is a fair question, and every county clerk in Indiana's 92 counties has a stake in the answer.
