Stevie Ray Vaughan was born 72 years ago today in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas. Traces of Texas reader Watt Casey took this photo of Stevie Ray with Double Trouble (Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon) at Sam's BBQ in East Austin on July 20, 1981, and was kind enough to let me post it here. Stevie Ray is gone, but Sam's is hanging on. This photo is one of many truly excellent photos of musicians in Austin that Watt included in his fantastic book "My Guitar is a Camera," which I highly recommend. I surely do miss Stevie Ray, even though he's directly responsible for about 20% of my hearing loss. RIP Stevie Ray Vaughan!
Thank you, Watt. What a photo!
The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day: Texas Tech University is 101 years old today, on account of it was Sept. 30, 1925 that Texas Technological College opened in Lubbock, with 914 students in four schools: Agriculture, Engineering, Home Economics, and Liberal Arts. Naturally, this being Texas and all, a bit of chicanery was involved.
The push to establish a college in West Texas began before 1900, almost as soon as settlers began putting down roots on the plains. Their efforts appeared to pay off in 1917, when the Texas Legislature approved the creation of West Texas A&M College as a branch of Texas A&M. But the victory was short-lived. The law was repealed at the next legislative session after it was discovered that Governor James E. Ferguson had falsely reported Abilene as the choice of the committee charged with selecting the college site.
Naturally, Ferguson's deception got everybody's dander up and stiffened the resolve of West Texans. With the West Texas Chamber of Commerce helping lead the campaign, supporters continued pressing Austin for a college of their own. Their persistence finally paid off in 1923, when the Legislature approved a compromise bill written by State Senator William H. Bledsoe of Lubbock and State Representative Lewis Carpenter of Dallas.
Competition for the new school was fierce. Thirty-seven West Texas towns submitted proposals, and the locating board visited every one of them before choosing Lubbock. A local steering committee purchased 2,008 acres just west of town and sold the land to the state for the new campus.
So ....Guns up, Red Raiders!
@OhioTate Tate please give this kid some cash and maybe your phone number and find a way to help him out because we all know Mintzy won’t and the kid deserves it. Hope he makes his dream come true at some point
Last thing on this: The reason I’ve fallen for Lubbock is because I see a place that embraces those who embrace it, a place that wants to be understood.
There’s no reason someone like me should connect in West Texas. It’s a powerful thing that it happens anyway.

When Joe Buck retires it’ll be a sad day for America.
If you’re not a fan of Joe Buck you’re not a fan of life.
Sometimes I wonder about the mission tortilla regional sales manager who cannot feed his family anymore bc he can’t explain why the sales in Lubbock have had a 200% decline over the past two years. Shame on the big 12 for getting him fired
At times, the joy that life attacks me with is unbearable and leads to gasping hysterical laughter. I find myself completely out of control and wonder how could life could surprise me again and again and again, so completely. How could a man be a cynic? It is a sin.
@OhioTate As a Michigan guy, hats off man. If every barstool employee tried even half as hard as you, the company would be worth a trillion dollars instead of a bunch of folks that do nothing but collect paychecks. Keep on grinding man
@beyoncegarden How about you show this to a construction worker that works 6 days a week, 12 hours a day for a fraction of this guys pay and ask him if he thinks it’s depressing?
@SaraLarsen1234 “Guys please stop, my dad might get fired for this and then I might have to like.. get a job like a poor or something” the lawyer who sent you this didn’t even do a good job
🚨 TODD BEAMER, UNITED 93 PHONE CALL: "LET'S ROLL" 🇺🇸
Todd: Hello… Operator… listen to me. I can’t speak very loud. This is an emergency. I’m a passenger on a United flight to San Francisco. Our plane has been hijacked.
Lisa: I understand. Can they see you?
Todd: No. There are three that we know of. They have knives — razor knives, like box cutters. Someone announced from the cockpit there was a bomb. It sounded fake.
Lisa: Your name?
Todd: Todd Beamer. United Flight 93.
Todd: They killed one passenger in first class. They forced most of us back. Fourteen of us here. Five flight attendants. The guy with the bomb ordered us to sit on the floor.
Lisa: Are you okay?
Todd: We’re going down… wait. No. We’re leveling off. We changed directions. We’re flying east again.
Todd: A guy named Jeremy called his wife. She told him two planes hit the World Trade Center. Lisa, is that true?
Lisa: I have to tell you the truth. It’s very bad. Both towers are gone. A third plane hit the Pentagon. Our country is under attack. I’m afraid your plane may be part of their plan.
Todd: Oh God. Lisa, will you do something for me? Call my wife and my kids. Promise me you’ll call.
Lisa: I promise.
Todd: Our home number is… You have the same name as my wife. Lisa. We’ve been married ten years. She’s pregnant with our third child. Tell her I love her. I’ll always love her. We have two boys — David, he’s 3, and Andrew, he’s 1. Tell them their daddy loves them and he is so proud of them. The baby is due January 12th. I saw an ultrasound. We still don’t know if it’s a girl or a boy.
Lisa: I’ll tell them. I promise, Todd.(Lisa patches in the FBI.)
Agent: Todd, your plane is on a course for Washington. Best guess is the White House or the Capitol.
Todd: I understand. I’ll be back.
Todd: Everyone knows this isn’t a normal hijacking. We have decided we will not be pawns in their plot.
Lisa: What are you going to do?
Todd: Four of us are going to rush the one with the bomb. Then the cockpit. A stewardess is getting boiling water. We’ll take them out.
Todd: Would you pray with me? [They pray the Lord’s Prayer.] Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.
Todd: God help me. Jesus help me. Are you guys ready? Let’s Roll.
