Official Statement
11 September 2025
I have been removed from the Maldives national handball team, not because of my performance, but for other reasons — a fact many coaches have now confirmed. I am 20 years old. I have already made Maldives proud. I was the first Maldivian handball player to train overseas, completing 2.5 months of intensive training in Malaysia with one of the best handball players in this region. I've been honoured with Maldives Sports Award 2024, selected among the Best 7 and part of Champions of the Year-winning teams.
During my training period, I shared full attendance and achievement records directly with the President of Maldives Handball Association. My commitment was transparent and fully documented.
Instead of recognition, I was suddenly asked at short notice — upon my immediate return, before I could even fully unpack — to attend a test under circumstances that made it extremely difficult to participate. I clearly informed the Association that I could not immediately take part. At no point was I told this would be used as a deciding factor for my place in the national team or as a reason for removal.
Afterwards, I began hearing conflicting narratives. Some coaches said it was about the test, while others admitted it was for entirely different reasons. These contradictions make it clear that the decision was not about my ability or dedication, but a situation deliberately manufactured against me.
This is deeply saddening. I love my country and carry the flag with pride. I felt the need to issue this statement to show the country how ambitious youth are being held back by corruption, nepotism and abuse of power from those in positions. No obstacle will break my determination to advance Maldivian handball.
— Mohamed Yashmu Ahmed
The 20 year old national top handball player @yashmu07 has been unfairly removed from the team in what looks like a pre-planned move. He was given only short notice to attend a test right after returning from 2.5 months of training in Malaysia. Corrupt officials are destroying the futures of young athletes just to push their own kids and friends into the team. Nepotism and favouritism have become the norm, leaving no room for merit. Shame on the coaches, the association, and the team for such a low quality, grudge driven decision. This is embarrassing.
On left is Ahmed Mujthaba, the president of the association. On right is @yashmu07, the 20 year old star who lived and breathed the sport until Mujthaba crushed his future. Imagine training abroad for months, giving everything, only to be thrown aside by a man more interested in protecting his circle than the country’s talent. That’s not leadership, it’s sabotage.
Mujthaba can’t destroy @yashmu07’s life just cause he wants to. Yash has already gone international. He's 20, fit, hungry, decades ahead. Block him from a team, but not from greatness. Jealous old men don’t win. Talent, youth and fire always do. If Mujthaba wants success, maybe try the gym and some fitness programmes.
Alhamdhulillah.
A great honor it is to win the first ever international gold medal in badminton for the Maldives in a junior international tournament sanctioned by an international federation, Badminton Europe.
I feel extremely happy to win Gold medal in Singles after beating Shahbazyan, rank no. 1 player of Georgia in QF, rank no. 1 player of Armenia Gayane in Semifinals and rank number 1 player of Cyprus, Emmelia in the finals. 🥇

@raajjemv Also check with the associations, Samah has been signing letters as the president of council from February 2024. NSC president is appointed by the minister. So how can he say I didn’t attend any meetings for 8 months🤣
I didn’t attend any meeting for 8 months and still minister or any other member of the council or secretariat didn’t even bother to check🤣 But the meetings of the council was still ongoing. How?? Explain that😳
