One of the largest dedicated farmland bird surveys to take place in Ireland is ongoing in east Cork atm. Funded by @SECADCork and @IrishDistillers with help from @TeagascEnviron Midleton and @DairygoldCo_Op 80sq km are being surveyed to see what crops birds use in winter …..

@IrishDistillers to increase their grain intake from Irish farmers by up to 50% as part of a large expansion plan. As part of their sustainability program they are funding farmland bird research, the paper below was recently published in @BirdsMatter_ie Irish Birds journal.

The farmyard provided good shelter for the Swift boxes in the recent heat, these chicks seem ready to jump. They spend a lot of time checking out their surroundings before taking the leap. Though I suppose it’s equally possible they’re just being nosy.

@John_Dunne_ Yes, male Yellowhammer John. We’re in the hungry gap for farmland birds now so they’re looking for alternative sources of food. Supplementary feeding on a farm scale pays off

Looks like most of the ploughs in east Cork were out the past week. Balancing the needs of food production and nature isn’t easy as I’ve seen groups of Skylark flying around looking for a new winter home. Good to see the @farmersjournal recently call for more research ….
