But this is not a new problem. It is a computational problem solved for decades. The answer was always graphics.

GPUs. The same chips that render video games. Doing trillion-operation math since before ChatGPT had a waitlist.

So he built a server. Bolted the frame together on his kitchen table. Mounted the motherboard. Seated the GPU like it was surgery.

The terminal shows systemd booting. Network, kernel, filesystems. Then llama.cpp loads the model and starts thinking.

A billion parameters. Small by frontier standards. Enough to replace everything most people pay a subscription for.

ChatGPT Plus: $240 a year. OpenAI API for a startup: $6,000 to $24,000 a year. Renting an A100 on the cloud: $17,000 a year.

He spent $3,000 once. His cost after month two: the electric bill.

The math does itself by month three.

No login. No API key. No server reading his prompts in Virginia.

Big AI spent billions teaching the world that intelligence needs a subscription.

He built it from parts and a weekend.
