Descending into the morass of thinking that removing a few recalcitrants can recalibrate relations is a morass that Iran’s regime always masters.

Until genuine regime change happens, and Iranians take back their nation, purge the leadership ranks of the clique that tormented them and the world over 47 years, and have the ability to freely choose their government, we remain in a forever war in Iran.

It is a war that was declared and launched by Iran even before the revolutionaries took over in 1979, and it is a war that reached an acute, escalated phase in summer 2003 and continued until now when the Iraqi regime was destroyed, the Iraq war was over and the Irano-Syrian war (Syria using Iraqi Sunni tribal federations) against us waged on Iraqi soil began.

The problem is that Iran surely knows this. So it must also know the President’s vulnerability and dependence on Hormuz gas and oil flow as well as the imperative of reasonable oil prices.

And if the Iranian regime has one absolutely consistent theme is that it likes to destroy and collect presidential scalps. One must assume thus that not only does it consistently try to assassinate the president by its agents, but it also longs to destroy him politically.

So this tells me they will continue on-again/off-again oil flows to keep global supply critically low (as opposed to Chinese supply which they will fill), and will then dangle the sword of Damocles over the U.S. to milk this for all it’s worth on every front until September and then go for the kill to sink the West’s economies. Essentially, they are setting the stage for a September surprise.

So this is the scenario for which the president must now prepare and steel himself, his administration, the U.S. and the broader global economy against.

But the Iranians know that, and they want to destroy the president politically. So the next months will be very very difficult as the Iranian regime will find ever more demanding ways to test and humiliate the President.

People are missing this because the deal is not important at all. The important thing is what Iran (along with Turkey, Qatar and Pakistan) has been able to get Trump to do while seeking it. Trump took a totally-remade Middle East that Israel had fought for, and smashed it to pieces. When people say Iran has never lost a negotiation, this is the sort of thing they mean. One consistent US demand/war goal (though lately de-emphasized) has been to sever Iran's relations with its proxies, such as Hezbollah.

Now, what's happening is that Iran is demanding that the United States protect Hezbollah from Israel not as a concession in talks, but as precondition for Iran condescending to speak to Trump.

This is, unfortunately, what happens when you negotiate with them.
